Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted. Using stereo headphones or earbuds is not required unless you have the Binaural Beat Enhanced version of My Meditation. If you do not use headphones or earbuds, you will not benefit from the brainwave science aiding your meditative state, but using them is not required to listen to My Meditation or the Guided Meditation Self-Mastery Collection.
We recommend you sit in a comfortable position with your spine straight, hands resting on your thighs, palms up, gazing straight ahead with your eyelids closed, unless the audio specifically suggests otherwise. (For instance, in Restful Sleep [from the Self-Mastery Collection] you should lay in bed)
You will be advised when to breathe through your nose or mouth during the meditation. As additional guidance, please follow these tips, especially whenever your mind begins to wander during the meditation:
1. Bring your attention to the bottom of your ribs and allow them to slightly flare out to the sides on the in-breath, then contract naturally on the out-breath. The upper chest and shoulders barely move.
2. Allow the breath to be at the depth where your body feels at ease.
Meditation is good for the brain. It appears to:
- Increase grey-matter
- Improve the immune system
- Reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being.
Meditation increases the thickness of the prefrontal cortex and the right anterior insula, areas involved in attention, compassion and sensory processing. Also, as you concentrate on your breath, you are calming the basal ganglia that controls anxiety and worry. This relaxes your body and regulates your heartbeat.
